100,000 and counting! Hypoxia, I can’t Breathe!
This pandemic has been undermined, politicized, and polarized. A few days ago our country, the grand USA has reached the horrible grim milestone of 100,000+ deaths. It only took 3 months to get to this point. We were told that this was a flu, we were told we would be open by April, we were misled and gaslit by our very own president. So much focus has gone into steering peoples expectations instead of preventing death and economic fallout. But was this the way things should have been done?
South Korea has been a great leader to its people in severely reducing the prevalence of the Coronavirus. They pursued cases at their source through contact tracing. They led a force that tested a huge percentage of their population compared to other countries. Taiwan, New Zealand, and Australia have followed suit and have come up with a similar results. Every country on Earth should be copying their example with extreme urgency.
But here I live in the “greatest country on Earth” ruled by self-appointed King Trump. King Trump has downplayed the severity of the virus as explained previously. Literally gaslights our nation with half the population hanging on his every word. This means many people will not be following protocol, such as wearing a mask when out in public or social distancing. People are taking the Pandemic as a personal plight as if their right not to wear a mask is more significant than someones right not to get sick. This state of mind also damages the collective’s right to a quick and speedy recovery, we all want to get back to life as usual.
As we go deeper and deeper into this Pandemic, race issues arise. Apparently, my country is still racist after 400 years of slavery and the subsequent rise of ill will and murder culture. There are currently riots and fires burning in big cities after 3 cops murdered an unarmed black man named George Floyd by pressing a knee to his kneck for 8 mins straight. Ahmaud Arbery was shot in Georgia about a week ago, so there has been a whole lot of unrest. Maybe people will start to see that black lives really do matter.
Murder will always be grim and evil without exception, and should only be committed in self-defense in order to prevent yourself or someone you love from losing their life. Otherwise, the vile, evil, and heinous act must be avoided at all costs. The policing in my fine country does not value life above law, they will kill an unarmed human being and call it collateral damage. In the mind of law enforcement, the target is must to be treated roughly and brutally! Pain must be inflicted and pleas for mercy silenced with deadly blows or a silencing gunshot. This is how our law enforcement values human lives, especially if you are black.

Study: Vitamin D deficiency may be linked to COVID-19 mortality — how a common vitamin could become pivotal
Vitamin D and the benefits it has for our immune system are now going mainstream. It has been known for quite some time that Vitamin D helps immune functions and is essential in fighting upper respiratory infections. Upper respiratory infections come from many different types of Coronaviruses including the common cold and the Flu. But confirming that vitamin D will help in combatting the coronavirus has gotten off to a slow start. Data has been released which confirms that individuals with vitamin D deficiency have a higher mortality rate.
It’s possible that many deaths could have been averted had this information had been shared liberally from the start. Most people living in northern latitudes are vitamin D deficient, and the darker your skin the more your skin filters the sun’s radiation and resulting in lower absorption of vitamin D. At midday you typically need 10-30 mins of sunlight exposure without sunscreen. The darker your skin the more time you need to spend in the sun to absorb the same amount of vitamin D. A study has revealed that 30 minutes of midday summer sun exposure in Oslo, Norway was equivalent to consuming 10,000–20,000 IU of vitamin D. We only need about 600 IU of Vitamin D per day. When it comes to Vitamin D absorption you can wear a hat and sunglasses and keep your face covered. But you want to keep as much of the rest of your skin exposed as possible.
One of the most disturbing headlines as of late is the higher frequency of which Black and Hispanic people are dying of the Coronavirus. It is well known that Black and Hispanic people are more deficient in vitamin D which may correlate in the higher statistical outcome in death rates due to the Coronavirus. As a Black male in America I have always noticed how Blacks and other minorities may avoid the sun to maintain a lighter skin tone, which came from centuries of racial trauma and mistreatment which in turn set having lighter skin as the beauty standard. But in the age of a deadly pandemic this mindset needs to be abolished and all shades of skin must step into the sun for our health and survival. We need Vitamin D like a plant that needs its Chlorophyll.

Protected by seclusion, Tangier Island in Chesapeake Bay keeps eye on virus from afar
Tangier Island is a secluded piece of land in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay. It’s a small quaint community whose survival is mostly based on fishing and crabbing. The median age of the Island is over 50 years old and the Island has no hospital or doctor who is ever-present. So people must go to the mainland to get treated. Currently no one on the Island has COVID19. If anyone on the island catches the virus and it spreads, this could be devastating. The community is close and intimate the population of under 500 extraordinarily vulnerable.
The only way to access the Tangier Island or by boat or plane. A few people go to and from the island but not many and not often. This level of isolation has certainly work to the existing population’s advantage when it comes to being COVID19 free. Tangier Island is also said to be slowly sinking beneath the Chesapeake bay due to rising waters caused by climate change. Tangier Island has two churches and one school, which are shuttered. Other than that life continues here in a way that America only knew weeks ago.
I would like to personally continue to monitor this small island during this pandemic to see how they fare. Right now Isolation is certainly working in their favor. But if they are not careful it can also be their major downfall. I wish them safety, good health, and prosperity.
