Study: Vitamin D deficiency may be linked to COVID-19 mortality — how a common vitamin could become pivotal

Vitamin D and the benefits it has for our immune system are now going mainstream. It has been known for quite some time that Vitamin D helps immune functions and is essential in fighting upper respiratory infections. Upper respiratory infections come from many different types of Coronaviruses including the common cold and the Flu. But confirming that vitamin D will help in combatting the coronavirus has gotten off to a slow start. Data has been released which confirms that individuals with vitamin D deficiency have a higher mortality rate.

It’s possible that many deaths could have been averted had this information had been shared liberally from the start. Most people living in northern latitudes are vitamin D deficient, and the darker your skin the more your skin filters the sun’s radiation and resulting in lower absorption of vitamin D. At midday you typically need 10-30 mins of sunlight exposure without sunscreen. The darker your skin the more time you need to spend in the sun to absorb the same amount of vitamin D. A study has revealed that 30 minutes of midday summer sun exposure in Oslo, Norway was equivalent to consuming 10,000–20,000 IU of vitamin D. We only need about 600 IU of Vitamin D per day. When it comes to Vitamin D absorption you can wear a hat and sunglasses and keep your face covered. But you want to keep as much of the rest of your skin exposed as possible.

One of the most disturbing headlines as of late is the higher frequency of which Black and Hispanic people are dying of the Coronavirus. It is well known that Black and Hispanic people are more deficient in vitamin D which may correlate in the higher statistical outcome in death rates due to the Coronavirus. As a Black male in America I have always noticed how Blacks and other minorities may avoid the sun to maintain a lighter skin tone, which came from centuries of racial trauma and mistreatment which in turn set having lighter skin as the beauty standard. But in the age of a deadly pandemic this mindset needs to be abolished and all shades of skin must step into the sun for our health and survival. We need Vitamin D like a plant that needs its Chlorophyll.

Protected by seclusion, Tangier Island in Chesapeake Bay keeps eye on virus from afar

Tangier Island is a secluded piece of land in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay. It’s a small quaint community whose survival is mostly based on fishing and crabbing. The median age of the Island is over 50 years old and the Island has no hospital or doctor who is ever-present. So people must go to the mainland to get treated. Currently no one on the Island has COVID19. If anyone on the island catches the virus and it spreads, this could be devastating. The community is close and intimate the population of under 500 extraordinarily vulnerable.

The only way to access the Tangier Island or by boat or plane. A few people go to and from the island but not many and not often. This level of isolation has certainly work to the existing population’s advantage when it comes to being COVID19 free. Tangier Island is also said to be slowly sinking beneath the Chesapeake bay due to rising waters caused by climate change. Tangier Island has two churches and one school, which are shuttered. Other than that life continues here in a way that America only knew weeks ago.

I would like to personally continue to monitor this small island during this pandemic to see how they fare. Right now Isolation is certainly working in their favor. But if they are not careful it can also be their major downfall. I wish them safety, good health, and prosperity.

Even Mild Coronavirus Cases Can Result In Lifelong Lung Damage

The Mind Of The Covidiot

There is a new term that has arrived and its one of my favorites that I have ever heard. This term is called the Covidiot! I find this term to be very precise when describing someone who does not follow the rules or guidelines when it comes to our ongoing pandemic concerning COVID19. Covidiots do not like to social distance, they do not follow advice from doctors and disease experts and even their own government. Covidiots think everything is a conspiracy, and they would rather have the country open back up and people go back to work while people are still dying in mass numbers from COVID19.

As a covidiot you may not understand that social distancing and closures of businesses are essential to stopping community spread of the coronavirus. Flattening the curve is a concept that prevents the number of infections from accelerating too quickly and overwhelming our medical systems. Social distancing also protects the more vulnerable and those with comorbidities from dying in higher numbers from COVID19. The fact that we have seen those numbers come down means that the worst-case scenarios have been avoided due to social distancing and the business closures implemented by our government.

So why are covidiots protesting all over our country with a request to go on with life as usual in the middle of a pandemic? Ignorance runs deep and has a viral way of spreading. People prefer to hear from those who align with their belief systems rather than those who are masters on the topic with doctorates. These experts do active research and publish peer-reviewed studies that they themselves have conducted along with a team of professionals from around the globe.

So let’s say that you catch this virus and do not die, there are now recovered patients who are athletes such as divers and runners who have permanent lung damage. This permanent lung damage will forever prevent them from doing the sports that they love. In other words you do not want this virus even if you survive because you may never be the same. It’s like saying yeah you can survive being shot, but why get shot when you can avoid? Some may recover and be fine but others may suffer permanent damage, and at worst lose their lives.
